Engine Control System - SFI System (to 12/2010)
2GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0010, P0020: Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)
P0020 - Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Bank 2)
DESCRIPTION
The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the ECM, Oil Control Valve (OCV) and VVT controller. The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the OCV. This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. Camshaft timing control is performed according to engine operating conditions such as intake air volume, throttle valve position and engine coolant temperature. The ECM controls the OCV, based on the signals transmitted by several sensors. The VVT controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the OCV. As a result, the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft are optimized, the engine torque and fuel economy improve, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The ECM detects the actual intake valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and performs feedback control. This is how the target intake valve timing is verified by the ECM.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
After the ECM sends the "target" duty-cycle signal to the OCV, the ECM monitors the OCV current to establish an "actual" duty-cycle. The ECM detects a malfunction and sets a DTC when the actual duty-cycle ratio varies from the target duty-cycle ratio.

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS
COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) DTC Check / Clear (to 12/2010).
4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
8. Read the DTCs [B].
9. If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
HINT
If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
11. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
12. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [A] again.
13. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
14. Check the judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
15. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear (to 12/2010).
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If DTC P0010 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the right bank VVT system.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes cylinder No. 1.
- If DTC P0020 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the left bank VVT system.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include cylinder No. 1.
- Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.
PROCEDURE
1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT SYSTEM (BANK 1 OR BANK 2))
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(c) On the Techstream, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank1) or Control the VVT System (Bank2).
(d) Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.
OK:
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
NG -- Continue to next step.
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
(a) Remove the OCV for intake camshaft.
(b) Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.
Standard resistance:
(c) Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and connect the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.
OK:
Valve moves quickly.
(d) Reinstall the OCV.
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the OCV for intake camshaft connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance between the terminals.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(d) Reconnect the OCV connector.
(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM)
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal (to 12/2010)
