Engine Control System - SFI System (from 12/2010)
2GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0016, P0018: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
DESCRIPTION
Refer to DTC P0010 Engine Control System - SFI System (from 12/2010).
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
- To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0016 (Bank 1) or P0018 (Bank 2).

* If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform steps [E] through [G].
14. Drive the vehicle for 2 to 3 minutes [E].
15. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [F].
16. Check the DTC judgment result [G].
HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
17. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear (from 12/2010).
HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 OR P0018)
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
(d) Read the DTCs.
Result:
HINT
If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0018 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
B -- GO TO DTC CHART Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart (from 12/2010)
A -- Continue to next step.
2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT SYSTEM BANK 1 OR BANK 2)
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2).
(d) Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.
OK:
NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0018)
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
(c) Clear the DTCs DTC Check / Clear (from 12/2010).
(d) Start the engine.
(e) Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.
(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.
(g) Read the pending DTCs using the Techstream.
OK:
No pending DTC output.
HINT
DTC P0016 or P0018 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay output even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
(a) Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH.
(b) Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft.
(c) Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position.
(d) Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align.
(e) Turn the crankshaft clockwise by 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again.
OK:
The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position.
