Removal and Installation
REMOVAL
1. Remove steering wheel pad.
CAUTION: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded. Never use air bag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.
a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Remove the 2 steering wheel lower No.2 covers.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.
NOTE: Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
d. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
CAUTION:
- When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.
- Never disassemble the wheel pad.
NOTICE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.
2. Remove steering wheel.
a. Disconnect the connector.
b. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
c. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
d. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09950 - 50010 (09951 - 05010, 09952 - 05010, 09953 - 05020, 09954 - 05020), remove the wheel.
3. Remove upper and lower column covers, Remove the 3 screws.
a. Remove the lower No.2 cover from the lower cover.
4. Remove cowl side trim and front door inside scuff plate.
5. Remove instrument lower finish panel.
a. Remove the lower LH instrument cover.
b. Remove the 2 panel set bolts.
6. Remove lower LH insert finish panel by removing the 2 to 4 panel set bolts.
7. Remove register duct.
8. Remove combination switch with spiral cable.
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector.
c. Remove the 3 screws.
9. Remove spiral cable.
CAUTION: Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.
10. Disconnect shift control cable. Using a screwdriver and offset wrench (23 mm), disconnect the shift control cable from shift lever assembly and shift cable bracket (COLUMN SHIFT).
11. Disconnect intermediate shaft.
a. Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B.
12. Remove intermediate shaft by removing bolt A.
13. Remove the dust seal from the intermediate shaft.
14. Remove steering column assembly.
a. Disconnect the connectors.
b. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.
INSTALLATION
1. Install steering column assembly.
a. Torque the 4 column assembly set nuts to 25 Nm (19 ft. lbs.).
b. Connect the connectors.
2. Install the dust seal to the intermediate shaft.
3. Install intermediate shaft. Temporarily tighten the bolt A.
4. Connect intermediate shaft.
a. Align the matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft.
b. Torque bolt B to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
c. Torque bolt A to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect shift control cable.
6. Install spiral cable.
7. Install combination switch with spiral cable.
a. Tighten the 3 screws.
b. Connect the air bag connector.
c. Connect the connectors.
8. Install register duct.
9. Install lower LH insert finish panel. Install the 2 panel set bolts.
10. Install instrument lower finish panel.
a. Tighten the 2 panel set bolts.
b. Install the lower LH instrument cover.
11. Install cowl side trim and front door inside scuff plate.
12. Install upper and lower column covers.
a. Tighten the 3 screws.
b. Install the lower No.2 cover to the lower cover.
13. Center spiral cable.
a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
b. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
c. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 3 turns to align the red mark.
NOTE: The cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of the center.
14. Install steering wheel.
a. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft assembly.
b. Torque the wheel set nut to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
c. Connect the connector.
15. Install steering wheel pad.
a. Connect the airbag connector.
b. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the torx screws is caught on the screw case.
c. Using a torx socket wrench, torque the 2 screws to 8.8 Nm (78 inch lbs.).
CAUTION:
- Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.
- If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks. dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.
- When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.
d. Install the 2 steering wheel lower No.2 covers.
16. Check steering wheel center point.
