Disassembly and Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

CAUTION: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.




1. Remove ignition key cylinder illumination and illumination bracket by removing the 2 screws.




2. Remove universal joint assembly.
a. Place matchmarks on the joint assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Remove the bolt.
3. Remove shift lock control ECU, by disconnecting the 3 connectors (COLUMN SHIFT).




4. Remove column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
a. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.
b. Using a 3 - 4 mm (0.12 - 0.16 inch). drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
c. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts.




5. Remove shift lever assembly (COLUMN SHIFT).
a. Remove the torx screw and shift lock switch.
b. Remove the 2 torx screws and shift lock solenoid bracket.
c. Remove the torx screw and shift lever.
d. Remove the 3 torx screws and shift lever assembly.




6. Remove turn signal bracket.
a. Remove the tension spring.
b. Remove the 2 torx screws.




7. Remove steering column housing with main shaft assembly.
a. Set Special Service Tool (SST) 09910 - 00015 (0991 1 -00011, 09912 - 00010), plate washer (18 and 36 mm outer diameter) and screw (4.0 mm diameter, 0.7 mm pitch, 15.0 mm length), as shown in image. Remove the 2 pivot pins.

Reference:
- Plate washer A (18 mm): 90562 - 04012
- Plate washer B (36 mm): 90201 - 10201
- Screw: 90154 - 40015

b. Remove the column housing with the shaft assembly from the column tube assembly.

CAUTION: Do not bend the universal joint of the main shaft assembly more than 20�.

c. Remove tilt spring and spring guide.
8. Remove steering column housing support.
a. Remove the 4 torx bolts.
b. Remove the 2 tilt No.1 stoppers.




9. Remove lower shaft bushing and lower shaft adapter. Using a screwdriver, remove the lower shaft adapter and lower shaft bushing from the column tube assembly.




10. Remove main shaft assembly.
a. Install SST 09612 - 07010 to the shaft assembly, as shown in the illustration.
b. Using SST, compress the compression spring.

CAUTION: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft assembly more than 20°.

NOTE: Hold the shaft assembly with your hand so that it does not rotate.

c. Using a screwdriver, remove the retaining ring.
d. Remove the spring retainer, compression spring, main shaft bushing and main shaft collar.

INSPECTION




1. Inspect steering lock operation. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly.




2. If necessary, replace key cylinder.
a. Place the ignition key at the ACC position.
b. Push down the stop pin with a thin rod, and pull out the key cylinder.
c. Install a new key cylinder.

NOTE: Make sure the ignition key is at the ACC position.

3. Inspect ignition switch.
4. Inspect key unlock warning switch.
5. If necessary, replace ignition switch with key unlock warning switch.
a. Remove the 4 screws.
b. Install a new switch assembly with 4 screws.
6. Inspect shift lock solenoid.
7. Inspect shift lock switch.
8. Inspect shift lock control ECU.




9. Inspect bearing.
a. Check the bearing rotation condition.
b. Check for abnormal noise.
c. If faulty, replace the column housing.

ASSEMBLY

CAUTION: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.




1. Coat with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.




2. Install main shaft assembly.
a. Install the main shaft collar, main shaft bushing, compression spring and spring retainer.
b. Install a new retaining ring to the shaft assembly.
c. Install the washer of SST to the shaft assembly.
d. Install SST 09612 - 07010 to the shaft assembly, as shown in the illustration.
e. Using SST, push down the retaining ring until it fits into the shaft groove.

CAUTION: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft assembly more than 20°.

NOTE: Hold the shaft assembly with your hand so that it does not rotate.

3. Install steering column housing support.
a. Install the 2 new tilt No.1 stopper.
b. Torque 4 new bolts to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).




4. Install lower shaft adapter and lower shaft bushing. Align a ditch of the tube and projection of the bearing adapter, and install the lower shaft bushing in the column tube assembly.
5. Install steering column housing.
a. Install the column housing with the shaft assembly into the column tube assembly.
b. Install the tilt spring and spring guide.
c. Using a vise to hold the column housing and column housing support.




d. Temporarily install 2 new pivot pins.




e. Using a punch and a hammer, tap in the pivot pinch
f. Using a pin punch, stake on 3 places evenly around the hole as shown in the illustration.




6. Install turn signal bracket. Torque 2 new screws to 7.5 Nm (65 inch lbs.).

NOTE: Set the hole of the bracket and projection of column housing.

7. Install shift lever assembly (COLUMN SHIFT).
a. Install the shift lever assembly and torque 3 new screws to 13 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
b. Install the shift lever with a new torx screw, then tighten to 11 Nm (8 Ft. lbs.).
c. Install the shift lock solenoid bracket with 2 new torx screws, then tighten to 3.4 Nm (30 inch lbs.).
d. Install the shift lock switch with a new torx screw, then tighten to 2.8 Nm (25 inch lbs.).




8. Install column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
a. Install the bracket with 2 new tapered-head bolts.

NOTE: Insert the bracket pin into the column tube hole.

b. Tighten the tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
9. Install shift control ECU. Connect the 3 connectors.
10. Install ignition key cylinder illuminate and illumination bracket. Tighten the 2 screws.
11. Install universal joint assembly.
a. Align the matchmarks on the joint assembly and main shaft assembly.
b. Torque the bolt to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
