Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

1. WARM UP ENGINE.
- Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

2. CONNECT TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL.



- Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
- Connect the Toyota hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- Please refer to the Toyota hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.

3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO ENGINE.
- Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the No.1 high-tension cord for No.4 cylinder.

4. CHECK IDLE SPEED.
- Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds, then allow to return to idle.
- Check the idle speed.

Idle speed: 700 ± 50 rpm

5. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING.



- Using a jumper wire (or SST 09843-18020), connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.



- Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.

Ignition timing @ idle: 8° - 12° BTDC
(Transmission in neutral position)


- Remove the jumper from the DLC1.

6. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING.

Ignition timing @ idle: 7° - 24° BTDC
(Transmission in neutral position)


HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 7° and 24°.

7. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT FROM ENGINE.
8. DISCONNECT Toyota HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL.
