Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The crankshaft position sensor provides the NE signal to the ECM. Overlapping this signal with the signals from the camshaft position sensors (G1 and G2) allows the ECM to calculate the engine's rotational angle and speed.

CONSTRUCTION
The sensor consists of a magnetic pickup with a twelve tooth rotor.

OPERATION
The sensor reads each protrusion on the timing rotor. As the protrusion passes in front of the sensor tip, the sensors magnetic field collapses and causes a voltage spike. The spike is read by the ECM.
