Inspection Procedure

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. CHECK VOLTAGE BETWEEN TERMINALS +B, +B1 AND E1 OF ECM CONNECTOR.
(a) Connect the Check Harness A.
(b) Turn Ignition Switch ON.

(c) Measure voltage between terminals +B, +B1 and E1 of ECM connector.

Voltage: 9 to 14 volts

^ If OK proceed to "DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM".
^ If not OK proceed to step 2.

2. CHECK FOR OPEN IN HARNESS AND CONNECTOR BETWEEN TERMINAL E1 OF ECM AND BODY GROUND.
^ If OK proceed to step 3.
^ If not OK repair or replace harness or connector.

3. CHECK VOLTAGE BETWEEN TERMINAL "IGSW" OF ECM CONNECTOR AND BODY GROUND.

(a) Turn ignition switch ON.
(b) Measure voltage between terminal "IGSW" of ECM connector and body ground.

Voltage: 9 to 14 volts

^ If OK proceed to step 6.
^ If not OK proceed to step 4.

4. CHECK FUSE "AM2" THEN "IGN".

(a) Remove fuse "AM2" from relay box R/B No.2 (engine compartment, left).
(b) Check continuity of fuse "AM2".
(c) Remove fuse "IGN" from J/B No.1 (kick panel, left).
(d) Check continuity of fuse "IGN".
^ If OK proceed to step 5.
^ If not OK check for short in the harness and all the components connected to "AM2" fuse or the "IGN" fuse, as indicated by test.

5. CHECK IGNITION SWITCH.
(a) Remove both under covers from driver's side of dashboard and the heater duct that is behind them.

Ignition Switch Terminal ID:

(b) Check continuity between the terminals of the ignition switch as shown in the following table.

Switch position: LOCK
No continuity between any terminals.

Switch position: ACC
Continuity between: terminals 5<->7.

Switch position: ON
Continuity between: terminals 2<->3;
and 4<->5<->7

Switch position: START
Continuity between: terminals 1<->2<->3
and 4<->7<->8

^ If OK check and repair harness and connector between battery and ignition switch; then ignition switch and ECM.
^ If not OK replace ignition switch.

6. CHECK VOLTAGE BETWEEN TERMINAL "M-REL" OF ECM CONNECTOR AND BODY GROUND.

(a) Turn ignition switch on.
(b) Measure voltage between terminal "M-REL" of ECM connector and body ground.

Voltage: 9 to 14 volts

^ If OK proceed to step 7.
^ If not OK check and replace ECM.

7. CHECK "EFI No.1" FUSE.

(a) Remove "EFI No.1" fuse from relay box, (R/B No.2).
(b) Check continuity of "EFI No.1" fuse.
^ If OK proceed to step 8.
^ If not OK check for short in the harness and all the components connected to "EFI No.1" fuse.

8. CHECK EFI MAIN RELAY.
See Fig. 13 in previous step for relay location info.
(a) Remove EFI main relay from the relay box, (R/B No.2).

(b) Check continuity between the terminals of EFI main relay as shown:

Continuity between: Terminals 1<->2;
Open between: Terminals 3<->5

(c) Apply battery voltage between terminals 1 and 2.
(d) Check continuity between terminals 3 and 5:

Continuity between: Terminals 3<->5

^ If OK proceed to step 9.
^ If not OK replace EFI main relay.

9. CHECK FOR OPEN AND SHORT IN HARNESS AND CONNECTOR BETWEEN TERMINAL "M-REL" OF ECM AND BODY GROUND.
^ If OK check and repair harness or connector between "EFI No.1" fuse (through fuse AM2 in R/B No.2) and battery.
^ If not OK repair or replace harness or connector.
