Inspection Procedure


DTC 51 - Switch Condition Signal

WIRING DIAGRAM




INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. CHECK OUTPUT CONDITION OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE 51.
Setting The Test Mode.
(a) Turn ignition switch OFF.

DLC2 Terminal ID:




(b) Connect terminals TE2 and E1 of DLC2.
(c) Turn ignition switch ON.
- (For checking terminal A/C, start the engine.)
- (For checking terminal IDL, disconnect the vacuum hose from the throttle body, then apply vacuum to the throttle opener)



(d) Connect terminals TE1 and E1 of DLC2.
(e) Check if code "51" is output by the malfunction indicator lamp.



NOTE: DTC 42 is output with vehicle speed 3 mph (5 km/h) or below. This is a feature, not a fault.

- If OK proceed to DIAGNOSIS BY SYMPTOM.
Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
- If not OK (PNP switch failure) go to the Non Trouble Code Charts.
Park/Neutral Position Switch Circuit
- If not OK (A/C failure) proceed to step 3.
- If not OK (IDL1 failure) proceed to step 2.

2. CHECK THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR.
- Disconnect throttle position sensor connector.



- Measure resistance between terminals 2 and 1 of throttle position sensor connector.

With Throttle Valve fully closed; Less than 0.5 K-Ohms
With Throttle Valve opened; 1 Mega-Ohm or higher


- If OK check and repair harness or connector between ECM and throttle position sensor.
- If not OK adjust or replace throttle position sensor.

3. CHECK VOLTAGE BETWEEN TERMINAL A/C OF ENGINE CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR AND BODY GROUND.



(a) Connect the Check Harness A.
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Measure voltage between terminal "A/C" of ECM and body ground.

With A/C Switch OFF: 7.5 - 14 volts
With A/C Switch ON: 0.0 - 1.5 volts


- If OK check and replace ECM.
- If not OK check A/C compressor circuit.
