This system allows atmospheric air to enter the intake manifold during periods of high temperature engine idle operation. The air/fuel mixture is leaned by a calibrated vacuum leak (atmospheric port) in the HIC valve.

The thermo sensor in the HIC valve controls the amount of air going to the intake manifold and the operation of the HAI control valve, according to ambient temperature within the air cleaner.
