Fig. 62 Testing Air Suction System:
SYSTEM TEST
1. Start the engine and maintain at idle speed.
2. Remove the air cleaner top cap.
3. Listen for "gurgling" sound coming from the AS valve inlet.
4. Disconnect the AS shut-off valve vacuum hose and plug the hose. Fig. 62
5. After one minute of engine idle operation, reconnect the AS shut-off valve vacuum hose.
6. A "gurgling" sound should be heard at the AS valve inlet within 2 - 6 seconds.
7. If not as specified, check every component in the air suction system.
8. Reinstall the air cleaner top cap.
Fig. 64 Testing Air Suction Reed Valve:
REED VALVE
1. Remove the AS reed valve from the air cleaner housing.
2. Apply vacuum to the shut-off valve diaphragm with a handheld vacuum pump. Fig. 64
3. Check that air will blow from the air filter side of the reed valve through the outlet pipe.
4. Check that air will NOT blow from the outlet pipe through the air filter side of the reed valve.
5. If not as specified, replace the AS reed valve.
6. Release the vacuum on the shut-off valve diaphragm and check that air does NOT blow in either direction.
7. If not as specified, replace the AS reed valve.
8. Reinstall the reed valve on the air cleaner housing and reconnect all hoses.
Fig. 65 Testing Vacuum Transmitting Valve:
VACUUM TRANSMITTING VALVE (M/T MODELS ONLY)
1. Remove the vacuum transmitting valve (VTV) from the vacuum line.
2. Air should blow from B (Black) to A (Gray) without resistance. Fig. 65
3. Air should NOT flow from A to B.
4. If a problem is found, replace the VTV.
5. Reinstall the VTV in its vacuum line.
