Fuel - Driveability Kit Service Procedures

TITLE: TERCEL DRIVEABILITY


Some 1987-1990 Tercels may experience slight driveability conditions. A production change has been made and is now available as a service kit.

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOLS:

Excessive carbon deposits on the intake valves can also affect driveability. Two Special Service Tools are now available:

HSW Borescope - this tool is used to inspect the intake valves through the spark plug holes for carbon deposits.

OTC Carbon Cleaner - this tool cleans the carbon from the intake valves with walnut shells. This procedure requires intake manifold removal.

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

The following pages list an application chart along with service procedures to install the Driveability Kit on previous Tercels.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:

A. Check the Part Number of the carburetor. Refer to TSB ENG017 if carburetor needs replacing.

INTAKE VALVE DEPOSIT RATING:




B. Inspect for intake valve deposits with a borescope. If any valves have level 6 or more deposits (as shown below), they must be cleaned. The OTC carbon blaster should be used for cleaning.
C. Install the driveability kit.



1. Replace the water outlet housing




2. Install the brass tube in the carburetor.



3. Install the VCV sub-assemblies.



4. Install the jet into the vacuum line to the EGR R-port (for Manual transmission vehicles only).



2. Replace the carburetor cold enrichment rod.



6. Replace the EGR BVSV.



D. Reroute the air conditioner vacuum hoses (for automatic transmission vehicles only).



E. Perform final engine adjustments.

1. Adjust ignition timing: 3 degrees BTDC
(w/ vac. advance disconnected)
2. Adjust base idle speed: ATM - 900 rpm
MTM - 700 rpm
3. Adjust fast idle speed: ATM - 2800 rpm
MTM - 3000 rpm
4. Adjust throttle position switch: 2000 +/- 100 rpm
5. Adjust A/C idle-up engine speed: 950 +/- 50 rpm
