Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer and connect the test probe to the distributor terminal connector. Fig. 144

NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.

3. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor sub-diaphragm and plug the hose end, Fig. 145
4. Connect a strobe timing light to the engine.
5. Check the ignition timing and compare with specification. Fig. 146

Ignition Timing: 3° BTDC at max. 950 rpm

NOTE: Check the ignition timing with the electric cooling fan OFF.

6. If necessary, loosen the distributor hold down bolt and turn the distributor to align the marks.
7. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the distributor.
8. Check the idle advance ignition timing.

Ignition Timing: 12 - 18° BTDC at max. 950 rpm

9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light.
