Timing Belt Removal
TIMING BELT REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative terminal cable from battery.
CAUTION (w/ SRS):
Wait 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery before starting repairs.
2. Remove RH engine under cover.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable.
4. A/T: Disconnect throttle cable.
5. Disconnect PCV hoses.
6. If equipped with A/C and/or P/S, remove pipe clamp bolts.
7. If equipped with A/C and/or P/S, remove drive belt.
8. Remove alternator drive belt.
9. Remove bolt, ground strap and vacuum transmitting valves with bracket from RH engine mounting insulator.
10. Remove RH engine mounting insulator.
(a) Slightly raise the engine with a jack.
HINT: Place a wooden block between the jack and engine.
(b) Remove the RH mounting insulator through bolt.
(c) Using a 14 mm deep socket wrench remove the nut.
(d) Remove the 2 bolts and RH engine mounting insulator.
11. Remove cylinder head cover.
Remove the 2 nuts, seal washers and cylinder head cover with gasket.
12. Remove spark plugs.
13. Set No.1 cylinder to TDC/Compression.
Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the "0" mark on the No.1 timing belt cover.
HINT: Check that the rocker arms on the No.1 cylinder are loose. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley one complete revolution.
14. Remove crankshaft pulleys.
(a) If equipped with A/C and/or P/S, Remove the 4 bolts and No.2 crankshaft pulley.
(b) Using SST 09123-14010 and 09330-00021, remove the pulley nut.
(c) Using SST 09213-31021, remove the pulley.
15. Remove timing belt covers.
Remove the 7 bolts, No.1 and No.2 timing belt covers.
16. Remove timing belt guide.
17. Remove timing belt and No.1 idler pulley.
HINT: If reusing the timing belt, draw a direction arrow on the belt (in direction of engine revolution), and place matchmarks on the pulleys and belt as shown.
(a) Remove the tension spring.
(b) Loosen the idler pulley bolt and push it left as far as it will go and then temporarily tighten it.
(c) Remove the belt.
(d) Remove the idler pulley bolt and pulley
18. Remove No.2 idler pulley.
19. Remove crankshaft timing pulley.
If the timing pulley cannot be remove by hand, use 2 screwdrivers.
NOTICE: Position shop rags as shown to prevent damage.
20. Remove camshaft pulley.
Hold the camshaft with wrench and remove the pulley bolt and timing pulley.
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.
21. Remove oil pump pulley.
Using SST O9616-12011, remove the pulley nut and pulley.
