Rear Axle Shaft Bearing & Oil Seal


1. Remove rear axle shaft as described under REAR AXLE SHAFT.
2. Check axle shaft runout, replace axle shaft if runout exceeds .059 inches.
3. Check flange runout, replace axle shaft if flange runout exceeds .004 inches.
4. Grind down bearing inner retainer, then using a chisel cut retainer off shaft.
5. Using press plate No. 09527-21011 or equivalent, press bearing from shaft.
6. Install bearing outer retainer and bearing on shaft, then press into place.
7. Heat bearing inner retainer in an oil bath to 302°F, then install bearing inner retainer on shaft and press into place. Non-beveled side of inner retainer should face toward bearing.
8. Inspect oil seal for wear or damage, replace as necessary.
9. Remove oil seal, if necessary.

10. Using seal installer, install seal to a depth of .220 inches, Fig. 15.
11. Install axle shaft as described under, REAR AXLE SHAFT.
