Rear Axle Shaft


REMOVAL
1. Remove rear wheels, then the brake drums.
2. Remove backing plate mounting nuts.
3. Using slide hammer No. 09520-00031 or equivalent, remove rear axle shaft. Ensure care is taken not to damage oil seal when removing shaft.
4. Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder, then remove backing plate.
5. Remove end gasket from rear axle housing.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply suitable sealer to both sides of end gasket and retainer gasket.
2. Install end gasket on axle housing with notch facing downward.
3. Install backing plate on axle housing, then connect brake line to wheel cylinder.
4. Install retainer gasket on axle shaft.
5. Install axle shaft, then the retaining nuts. Torque nuts to 48 ft. lbs.
6. Install brake drums, then bleed brake system.
7. Install wheels.
