Fuel Pump: Description and Operation

Electric Fuel Pump:

The fuel pump is an electrically driven roller motor mounted in the fuel tank. The fuel pump is submerged in gasoline and utilizes the gasoline to cool the motor. By locating the pump in the tank, the entire fuel line to the engine can remain pressurized, thus preventing vapor lock. There is a check valve in the fuel pump outlet that prevents fuel system bleed down after the engine is turned off. This aids in warm engine restarts, as the fuel system will hold fuel pressure for 20 - 30 minutes.

The fuel pump is powered by the Circuit Opening Relay and is capable of producing fuel pressure in excess of 75 psi. This provides adequate fuel volume to the injectors where the Fuel Pressure Regulator can return the excess fuel back to the fuel tank in a complete circuit.
