RECYCLED COOLANTS

BACKGROUND:

Because of increasing environmental regulations, Toyota anticipates heightened interest in and proliferation of recycled engine coolant in the United States. Already, many dealers are being approached by coolant recycling companies. This has raised questions regarding Toyota's acceptance of recycled coolant for use in it's engines.

Toyota is currently evaluating the viability of recycled engine coolant. The evaluation process is quite extensive and takes into account several important aspects including temperature, corrosion, lubrication, and foaming performance testing.

RECOMMENDATION

Due to the difficulty in regulating the amount of additives used in recycled coolant, the performance characteristics will vary. In addition, long-term testing and evaluation have not been conducted. Subsequently, Toyota does not currently recommend recycled engine coolant for use in any vehicle.
