Timing Belt Removal
REMOVAL OF TIMING BELT
1. Remove RH wheel.
2. Remove engine under cover.
3. Drain coolant.
4. Disconnect accelerator link.
(a) On vehicles with cruise control, Disconnect the cruise control cable.
(b) Disconnect the accelerator cable.
5. On vehicles with cruise control, remove cruise control actuator.
(a) Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the actuator and vacuum switch.
(b) Disconnect the actuator and vacuum switch connectors.
(c) Remove the three bolts and actuator.
(d) Remove the two bolts and actuator bracket.
6. Remove washer tank.
7. Remove water outlet hose.
8. Remove PS and/or A/C Drive belt.
(a) Loosen the drive belt adjusting set bolt.
(b) Loosen the adjusting bolt and remove drive belt.
9. Loosen water pump pulley bolt and remove alternator drive belt.
(a) Loosen the water pump pulley set bolts.
(b) Loosen the drive belt adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.
10. Remove spark plugs.
Using plug wrench (16 mm), remove the spark plugs.
11. Set No.1 cylinder at TDC/Compression.
(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the idler pulley bolt.
(b) Remove the oil filler cap and check that you can see the cavity in the camshaft. If necessary, turn the crankshaft pulley one complete revolution.
12. Remove RH engine mounting insulator.
(a) Set the jack to the engine.
NOTE: Place a wooden block between the jack and engine.
(b) Remove the three bolts and RH mounting stay.
(c) Remove the two nuts, mounting through bolt and RH engine mounting insulator.
13. Remove water pump pulley.
Remove the set bolts and water pump pulley.
14. Remove crankshaft pulley.
(a) Using SST 09213-70010 and 09330-00021 to hold the crankshaft pulley, loosen the pulley bolt.
(b) Remove SST and pulley bolt.
(c) Using SST 09213-31021, remove the crankshaft pulley.
15. Remove timing belt covers with gaskets.
Remove the ten bolts and timing belt covers with gaskets.
16. Remove timing belt guide.
17. Remove timing belt and idler pulley.
NOTE: It reusing the timing belt, draw a direction arrow on the belt (in direction of engine revolution), and place matchmarks on the pulleys and belt as shown.
(a) Loosen the idler pulley bolt, push it left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten it.
(b) Remove the belt.
(c) Remove the Idler pulley bolt, pulley and tension spring.
18. Remove crankshaft timing pulley.
NOTE: If the pulley is difficult to remove by hand, remove using SST 09950-20017.
19. Remove PCV hose.
20. Remove cylinder head covers.
(a) Disconnect following wires:
^ Noise filter connector
^ Distributor wire connectors
^ Oil pressure sender gauge connector
^ Compressor connector (A/C only)
(b) Remove the center cover with gasket and the EGR modulator bracket.
(c) Remove cap nuts, seals and head covers with gaskets.
21. Remove camshaft timing pulleys.
Secure the camshaft and remove the camshaft timing pulley bolt.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench.
