Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Fig. 40a Connecting Tachometer:
1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer, connect the test probe to distributor terminal connector. Fig. 40a
NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.
Fig. 41a Check Connector And Service Wire:
3. Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector. Fig. 41a
4. Run the engine at 1,000 - 1,300 rpm for 5 seconds, and check that engine returns to idle speed.
Idle Speed: 700 rpm ± 50
Fig. 47 Base Ignition Timing Marks:
5. Using timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley, Fig. 42a
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
6. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
7. Remove service wire.
8. Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing: 13 - 22° BTDC at idle
9. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
