Diesel MFI Pump: Adjustments

1. Install a dial indicator onto the distributive head plug, Fig. 20.
2. Set dial indicator to zero.
3. Ensure dial indicator remains at zero, while rotating crankshaft pulley slightly to the left and right.
4. Slowly rotate crankshaft until the No. 1 or No. 4 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke.
5. Measure plunger stroke. Plunger stroke should be .032 inch on 1984 models or .028 inch on 1985-86 models at TDC of compression stroke.
6. To adjust injection timing, proceed as follows:
a. Loosen four injection line union nuts on the pump side.
b. Loosen injection pump mounting bolts and nuts.
c. Adjust plunger stroke by tilting injection pump body. If plunger stroke is less than specified amount, tilt pump toward engine. If plunger stroke exceeds specified amount, tilt pump away from engine.
