Brake Caliper: Service and Repair


Pads, Replace

1. Remove front wheel and reinstall lug nuts to locate disc temporarily.
2. Check that brake pad thickness is at least .039 inch (1 mm). Replace pads if too thin.
3. Remove caliper from torque plate and suspend so brake hose is not under tension. Do not disconnect brake hose.

4. Refer to Fig. 11, and remove the following components:
a. Brake pads.
b. Anti-squeal shims.
c. Pad wear indicator plates.
d. Support plates.
e. Anti-squeal springs.



5. Install new pad support plates.
6. Install new pad wear indicator plates on each pad with arrow pointing in direction of disc rotation.
7. Install new anti-squeal shims on each pad.
8. Install each brake pad on to each support plate.
9. Install anti-squeal springs.
10. Siphon out a small amount of brake fluid from reservoir and press caliper piston in with hammer handle. Change one brake pad at a time to prevent chance of opposite piston from flying out.
11. Install caliper taking care not to wedge dust boot. Torque attaching bolts to 18 ft. lbs. on all except 1987-88 Camry and Celica GTS. On 1987-88 Camry, torque attaching bolts to 29 ft. lbs. On Celica GTS models, torque attaching bolts to 27 ft. lbs.
12. Install wheel and check that brake fluid level is at MAX line.

Caliper, Replace

1. Raise and support vehicle and remove front wheel.
2. Remove union bolt and disconnect brake hose. Use suitable container to catch brake fluid.




3. Remove bolts and remove caliper, Fig. 11.




4. Remove anti-squeal shims and brake pad wear indicator plates.
5. Remove support plates.
6. Reverse procedure to install.

Disc, Replace

1. Remove caliper as described under "Caliper, Replace".
2. Scribe alignment marks between brake disc and hub, then remove disc.
3. Reverse procedure to install.

Caliper Overhaul

1. Remove caliper as described under "Caliper, Replace".
2. Remove the following parts:
a. Caliper slide bushings.
b. Dust boots.
c. Collars.
3. Using screwdriver, remove caliper boot set ring and boot.
4. Place suitable rag between caliper and piston and using compressed air, remove pistons.
5. Using screwdriver, remove piston seal.
6. Apply suitable lubricant to following parts: boot, piston seal, piston, slide bushing, collar, and dust boot.
7. Install piston seal(s) and piston(s) in caliper.
8. Install caliper boot and set ring in caliper.
9. Install collar and dust boots in caliper.
10. Check that boots are firmly seated in caliper grooves.
11. Install bushing into boots.
12. Check that boots are firmly secured to each bushing groove.
