Driveshaft Service

1. Inspect driveshaft for damage or wear. Check boot for leaking grease or loose clamps.
2. Remove snap ring, Fig. 2, then remove boot clamp.
3. Place mark across driveshaft and inboard shaft joint for reference during assembly, then remove clamp and joint.
4. Remove snap ring, then place mark across tripod and shaft for reference during assembly. Remove tripod from shaft.
5. Remove outboard joint boot clamp and boot. Do not disassemble outboard shaft.
6. Reverse procedure to assemble. Align matchmarks made during disassembly. Lubricate inboard joint shaft cavity with suitable grease. On 1982-84 models, right hand side driveshaft assembled length should be 28.50 inches (724 mm) and left hand side driveshaft assembled length should be 24.61 inches (625 mm). On 1985-86 and 1987-88 wagon models, right hand driveshaft assembled length should be approximately 24.41 inches (620 mm) and left side driveshaft assembled length should be approximately 28.43 inches (722 mm). On 1987-88 sedan models, right hand driveshaft assembled length should be approximately 30.882 inches (784.4 mm) and left side driveshaft assembled length should be approximately 21.815 inches (554.1 mm).
