Cruise Control - Updated Repair/Diagnostics

This bulletin contains the inspection and repair procedures resulting from a change in the cruise control system on the Corolla (FR) after February 1984 production. The cruise control switch has been relocated from the instrument panel to the stalk lever for easier operation.

INSPECTION OF CONTROL SWITCH

1. INSPECT SWITCH CONTINUITY

If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch.

Continuity:




2. INSPECT SWITCH OPERATION

Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal
16. Connect the negative (-) lead to terminal 20.

(a) Check that there is continuity between terminals 16 and 21 with the main switch turned on.

No Continuity:




(b) Check that there is no continuity between terminals 16 and 21 with the main switch turned off. If operation is not as specified, replace the switch.

REPLACE CONTROL SWITCH
(a) Remove the terminals from the connector.

(b) Remove the control switch with two screws.

(c) Install the control switch with two screws.
(d) Install the terminals to the connector.

Cruise Control Computer Circuit

INSPECTION OF COMPUTER CIRCUIT Disconnect the computer and inspect the connector on the wire harness side as shown in the chart below.

Setting speed does not cancel when Inspection of clutch switch and circuit F
clutch pedal depressed (M/T only).

Setting speed does not cancel when Inspection of neutral start switch and G
shifted to "N" range (A/T only). circuit

Speed can be set below 20 km/h (12 mph).
Cruise control will not disengage even Inspection of speed sensor and circuit H
below 20 km/h (12 mph).

3-8 = CLOSED WITH MAIN S/W PUSHED IN. 1-2 = 30 OHMS (CONTROL VALVE)
1-7 = CLOSED WITH CONTROL S/W AT SET POSITION. 1-3 = 68 OHMS (RELEASE VALVE)
2-7 = CLOSED WITH CONTROL S/W AT RESUME POSITION. (H) CRUISE CONTROL STOP S/W
(C) SPEED SENSOR 1-2 = CLOSED WITH BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED.
CLOSED 4 TIMES PER SPEEDOMETER SHAFT REVOLUTION.

(D) PARKING BRAKE S/W (I) STOP LIGHT S/W
1-GROUND = CLOSED WITH PARKING BRAKE LEVER 1-2 = CLOSED WITH BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED.
PULLED UP (ONE OF THE CANCEL S/W). (ONE OF THE CANCEL S/W)
(E) CLUTCH S/W 2-3 = CLOSED WITH CLUTCH PEDAL DEPRESSED. (ONE OF THE CANCEL S/W)
