Timing Cover: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. On Camry models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove right side front wheel.
b. Remove fender apron seal.
c. Remove washer and radiator reservoir tanks.
d. Remove cruise control actuator.
e. Remove power steering pump and position aside.
f. Remove A/C idler pulley and bracket assembly.
g. Remove alternator and alternator bracket.
3. On Corolla models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove engine under cover attaching bolts, then the engine under cover.
b. Remove power steering pump drive belts and pulley.
c. Remove power steering pump and position aside. Do not disconnect power steering pump fluid lines.

4. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover attaching bolts, then the cover, Fig. 10.
5. Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke.
6. Remove crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove No. 1 timing belt cover and belt guide.
8. Raise engine slightly.
9. On Camry models, remove right side engine mount insulator and bracket.
10. On Corolla models, remove engine mount center crossmember, right side engine mount and bracket.

11. Remove timing belt as follows. If original timing belt is to be used, draw a direction arrow on timing belt (in direction of engine rotation) and place alignment marks on the sprockets and timing belt, Fig. 11.
a. Using a suitable screwdriver, remove tension spring.
b. Loosen No. 1 idler pulley mount bolt.
c. Remove timing belt from engine.
12. Remove camshaft timing sprocket, injection pump drive pulley, No. 2 idler pulley and crankshaft timing sprocket from engine.
13. Reverse procedure to install. During installation of timing belt, note the following:
a. If original timing belt is used, align marks placed during removal and install timing belt with arrow pointing in direction of engine rotation.
b. If a new timing belt is to be used, install timing belt with numbers and letters that can be read from the rear of the engine.
c. After installation of timing belt, turn crankshaft 2 revolutions from TDC to TDC.
d. Ensure timing sprocket and timing belt marks align.
