Seat Belts - Use of Toyota Child Restraint Locking Clip
REFERENCE BODYNUMBER 001/1545

MODEL ALL
Most Toyota vehicles use ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) type seat belt systems which are designed to lock on rapid vehicle deceleration. When a Child Restraint is used with an ELR system, the child restraint may not be properly secured during non-emergency conditions. Toyota is therefore offering a locking clip, Part Number 73119-22010 for use with child restraints to encourage their use on ELR equipped vehicles. To properly use this part, you must first determine which type of ELR is installed in the subject vehicle and then follow the specific instructions for that type of ELR.
Caution: There may be some Child Restraints being sold which may not be compatible with Toyota's seat belt systems as described below.
^ Fixed End (Type 1)
This type has the attached end of the lap belt fixed (no retractor) and the attached end of the shoulder belt in a single retractor on the shoulder end.
Child Restraint Belt:
Position the tab at the appropriate point to provide sufficient length for the lap portion to fit the child restraint. Weave both the lap and shoulder belts through the locking clip near the tab as shown in the illustration.
If the lap portion of the belt is too long, remove the clip, reposition the tab and reinstall the locking clip.
DOUBLE RETRACTOR:
^ Double Retractor (Type II)
In this type both the shoulder belt and the lap belt are retracted on the same reel and the belts have the tab stoppers as shown.
Slide the seat to the rearmost position. Position the tab near the lap end tab stopper. Weave the lap and shoulder webbing through the locking clip between the two tab stoppers as shown in the illustration. To secure the child restraint firmly, slide the front passenger seat forward to where the belt is fully extended from the retractor.
INDIVIDUAL RETRACTORS:
^ Individual Retractors (Type III)
In this case, there are separate lap and shoulder belts attached to the same tab. You will use the locking clip to shorten the lap belt.
Slide the front passenger seat to the rearmost position. Pull the lap belt out fully from the retractor and shorten the lap belt by winding it around the locking clip as shown in the illustration. To secure the child restraint firmly, slide the front passenger seat further forward to where the belt is fully extended from the retractor.
Note: If the Child Restraint is still loose, Toyota recommends the use of an additional locking clip to secure the Child Restraint firmly.
KEY POINT: PULL TIGHTLY TO LOCK THE BELT AS SHOWN IN (6)
CAUTION: REMOVE THE CLIP WHEN THE SEAT BELT IS USED FOR ADULT RESTRAINT.
^ Lap Belts (Rear Seat, Passive Belt - equipped, or older models)
If the lap belt is ALR, the locking clip is not needed. For ELR lap belts, use the locking clip to shorten the lap belt to the proper length following the procedure under "Individual Retractors" above.
CAUTION: REMOVE THE CLIP WHEN THE SEAT BELT IS USED FOR ADULT RESTRAINT.
"The foregoing instructions concerning the use of the locking clip are for use in connection with passenger restraint systems used in Toyota vehicles. Use of the locking clip may or may not be compatible with passenger restraint systems used in vehicles other than Toyota. No warranties or representations are made in respect to the use of the Toyota locking clip in non-Toyota vehicles."
