Rear

The following procedures apply to front wheel drive models only.

Fig. 5 Rear wheel bearing. Tercel sedan models w/front wheel drive:

TERCEL SEDAN

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove grease cap, cotter pin, nut lock and adjusting nut, Fig. 5.
3. Remove brake drum/hub assembly with outer bearing and thrust washer from axle shaft.
4. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry oil seal from hub, then remove inner bearing.
5. Inspect inner and outer bearings and races for wear and damage. If necessary, replace race(s) with suitable removal and installation tools.
6. Clean and repack bearings and fill inside of axle hub and grease cap with multipurpose grease.
7. Install inner bearing in axle hub, then install new oil seal using suitable seal installer. Grease oil seal lips with multipurpose grease.
8. Install brake drum/hub assembly on axle shaft, then install outer bearing in hub. Apply multi-purpose grease between outer bearing and thrust washer surface, then install thrust washer.
9. Install adjusting nut and torque to 22 ft. lbs., then rotate brake drum/hub assembly to seat bearings. Loosen adjusting nut until hand tight. Ensure brakes are not dragging.
10. Attach suitable spring scale to wheel stud and measure oil seal rotation frictional force. Oil seal frictional force should be approximately .9 lb.
11. With spring scale still attached, tighten adjusting nut until bearing preload is .9-2.2 lbs. above the oil seal frictional force determined in step 10.
12. Install locknut, cotter pin and grease cap. If cotter pin will not line up with axle shaft hole, tighten adjusting nut as small an amount as possible to align.
13. Adjust rear brakes as necessary.

Fig. 6 Rear wheel bearing (typical):

1. Remove brake drum or rotor and check bearing axial play. Play should not exceed .002 inch.
2. On models w/drum brakes, disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder, Fig. 6.
3. Remove 4 bolts holding axle hub to axle carrier and remove axle hub and rear brake assembly.
4. Remove O-ring.
5. Place hub in suitable vise. Using hammer and chisel, loosen stake part of nut and remove nut.
6. Using special tool 09550-20014, push axle shaft off axle hub.
7. Remove inside portion of bearing inner race.
8. Using special service tool 09950-20014, pull outside portion of bearing inner race from axle shaft.
9. Remove oil seal.
10. To replace wheel bearing, place old inner race (outside) on bearing, then using special service tools 09228-22020 and 09636-20010, press out bearing.
11. Apply MP grease around bearing outer race and using special service tool 09316-60010 press new bearing into axle hub.
12. Using special service tool 09310-35010, or equivalent, drive new oil seal into axle hub.
13. Apply MP grease to oil seal lip.
14. Place inside portion of bearing inner race on bearing.
15. Using special service tool 09636-20010 and 09228-22020, press inner race with axle hub onto axle shaft.
16. Torque nut to 90 ft. lbs. (1250 kg-cm) and stake.
17. Place new O-ring on axle carrier.
18. Install axle hub and rear brake assembly with 4 bolts. Torque bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (820 kg-cm).
19. On models w/drum brakes, connect brake line to wheel cylinder, then install brake drum and bleed brakes.
20. On models w/disc brakes, install rotor and caliper assembly.
