Rear Axle Shaft LH

REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR REAR LH [89546 / 98-170]
3. REMOVE REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B / 98-63]
4. REMOVE STRUT ROD ASSY REAR [48780A / 98-90]
5. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH [48740F / 98-90]
6. SEPARATE REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH [48720A / 98-90]
7. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts and brake caliper.
b. Support the brake caliper securely.
8. REMOVE REAR DISC [42431 / 98-63]
9. PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING [46550E / 98-78]
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT COMPRESSION SPRING [47613D / 98-78]
11. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT LH [47614 / 98-78]
12. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE
13. SEPARATE PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY NO. 3 [46430 / 98-78]





14. REMOVE AXLE ASSY RR LH
a. Remove the 2 bolts, nuts and the rear axle from shock absorber.
15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH [42312 / 98-63]
a. Mount axle carrier in a soft vise.





b. Using SST, remove the rear axle hub.
SST 09950-00020, 09521-00020





c. Using SST, remove the axle hub bearing inner race (outer side) from the axle hub.
SST 09950-60010 (09951-00370), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)
16. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH OIL SEAL [42312C / 98-63]





a. Using SST, remove the oil seal (inner side).
SST 09308-00010





HINT: If the oil seal comes off together with the rear axle shaft, remove the oil seal from the shaft.





17. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE PLATE SUB-ASSY LH [46504 / 98-78]
a. Remove the 4 bolts and parking brake plate.





18. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING [42312D / 98-63]
a. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
19. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING [42312A / 98-63]





a. Using SST and a press, remove the bearing from the rear axle carrier.
SST 09527-17011, 09950-60010 (09951-00600), 09950-70010 (09951-07100)
20. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH BEARING [42312A / 98-63]





a. Using SST and a press, install the new bearing to the rear axle carrier.
SST 09214-76011, 09527-17011





21. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH SNAP RING [42312D / 98-63]
a. Using a snap ring expander, install the new snap ring.
22. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH OIL SEAL [42312C / 98-63]





a. Using SST and a press, install the new oil seal (outer side) to the rear axle shaft.

23. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE PLATE SUB-ASSY LH [46504 / 98-78]
a. Install the parking brake plate with the 4 nuts.
Torque: 72 Nm (730 kgf-cm, 53 ft. lbs.)
24. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH [42312 / 98-63]





a. Using SST and a press, install the axle shaft to the rear axle carrier.
SST 09950-60010 (09951-00600), 09950-70010 (09951-07100), 09223-15020
25. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH OIL SEAL [42312C / 98-63]





a. Using SST and a press, install the new oil seal (inner side) to the rear axle carrier.
SST 09502-12010, 09950-60020 (09951-00890), 09223-15020





26. INSTALL AXLE ASSY RR LH
a. Install the rear axle to the shock absorber with the 2 bolts and nuts.
Torque: 255 Nm (2,600 kgf-cm, 188 ft. lbs.)

HINT: Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and install the nut.

27. CONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSY NO. 3 [46430 / 98-78]
28. APPLICATION HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
29. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE
30. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT LH [47614 / 98-78]
31. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE STRUT COMPRESSION SPRING [47613D / 98-78]
32. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING [46550E / 98-78]
33. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
34. INSTALL REAR DISC [42431 / 98-63]
35. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
36. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH
a. Install the brake caliper with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 58 Nm (592 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the flexible hose and speed sensor wire harness with the bolt.
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
37. TEMPORARY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH [48720A / 98-90]
38. TEMPORARY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH [48740F / 98-90]
39. TEMPORARY TIGHTEN STRUT ROD ASSY REAR [48780A / 98-90]
40. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSY LH [42340B / 98-63]
41. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR REAR LH [89546 / 98-170]
42. STABILIZE THE SUSPENSION
43. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 1 LH [48720A / 98-90]
44. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSY NO. 2 LH [48740F / 98-90]
45. FULLY TIGHTEN STRUT ROD ASSY REAR [48780A / 98-90]
46. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY, LH
47. REMOVE REAR DISC [42431 / 98-63]





48. INSPECT BEARING BACKLASH
a. Set a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch)
If the backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.





49. INSPECT AXLE HUB DEVIATION
a. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.07 mm (0.0027 inch)
If the backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub assembly.
50. INSTALL REAR DISC [42431 / 98-63]
51. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY, LH
a. Install the brake caliper with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 58 Nm (592 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.)
b. Install the flexible hose and speed sensor wire harness with the bolt.
Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.)
52. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
53. CHECK PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL
54. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
55. INSPECT REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
56. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
