Introduction
Some 2001 - 2003 model year Highlander vehicles may exhibit a "squeak" or shudder noise when turning the steering wheel. The steering column hole cover has been changed to correct this condition.

Applicable Warranty:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.
Parts Information
NOTE:
The countermeasure vehicles can be identified by the Lot Number on steering intermediate shaft yoke as shown. Lot numbers with the date "3320" (March 20, 2003) and later are the updated parts.
Repair Procedure
Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model year Highlander Repair Manual: Steering Column: Steering Column Assembly: Overhaul.
1. Remove the Steering Intermediate Shaft Sub-assembly.
NOTE:
Prior to removing the Steering Intermediate Shaft Sub-assembly, apply match marks to the shaft and secure the steering wheel to prevent it from rotating.
2. On the new Steering Column Hole No. 2 Cover, apply molybdenum grease to the cover where it contacts the steering shaft.
3. Re-assemble the vehicle and tighten all fasteners according to TIS.
4. Confirm the repair eliminated the noise concern.
