Thermostat: Service and Repair

REPLACEMENT
1. DRAIN COOLANT
2. REMOVE BATTERY
3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSY [17700 / 98-30]
a. Disconnect the MAF meter connector and wire clamp.
b. Disconnect the VSV connector for Canister Closed Valve (CCV) and air hose.
c. Disconnect the 3 vacuum hoses.
d. Loosen the hose clamp.
e. Remove the air cleaner cap.
f. Remove the air filter.
g. Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner case.
4. SEPARATE RADIATOR HOSE OUTLET [16572 / 98-20]
5. REMOVE WATER INLET PIPE [16322 / 98-20]
a. Remove the bolt and water inlet pipe.
6. REMOVE WATER INLET [16321 / 98-20]
a. Remove the 3 bolts and water inlet.
7. REMOVE THERMOSTAT [16331A / 98-20]





8. INSTALL THERMOSTAT [16331A / 98-20]
a. Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
b. Align the thermostat jiggle valve with the upper stud bolt, and insert the thermostat in the water inlet housing.

HINT: The jiggle valve may be set within 15° of either side of the prescribed position.

9. INSTALL WATER INLET [16321 / 98-20]
Torque: 8 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)
10. INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE [16322 / 98-20]
a. Install a new O-ring to the water inlet pipe.
b. Apply soapy water to the O-ring.
c. Connect the water inlet pipe to the water inlet.
d. Install the bolt holding the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)
11. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSY [17700 / 98-30]
Torque: 5 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.)
12. ADD COOLANT
13. INSPECT COOLANT LEAKS
