This Technical Service Bulletin informs you of the procedure for the Deceleration Sensor check function of the ABS for L4 and V6 (4WD) 1998 Tacoma models.







1. CHECK DECELERATION SENSOR DETECTION POINT

(a) Turn the ignition switch OFF.
(b) Using SST, connect the terminals Ts and E1 of the DLC1.

(c) Start the engine.







(d) Check that the ABS warning light blinks.

HINT:
If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the ABS warning light circuit.







(e) Jack up the rear side of the vehicle slowly, as shown.

HINT:
When measuring the height, measure at the bottom of the lower rear bumper of the vehicle.

(f) Check that the ABS warning light blinks. If the warning light remains on, inspect the deceleration sensor installation. If the sensor installation is OK, replace the deceleration sensor.

(g) Jack down the vehicle slowly.







(h) Jack up the front side of the vehicle slowly, as shown.

HINT:
When measuring the height, measure at the bottom of the lower front bumper of the vehicle.

(i) Check that the ABS warning light blinks. If the warning light remains on, inspect the deceleration sensor installation. If the sensor installation is OK, replace the deceleration sensor.

(j) Jack down the vehicle slowly.







2. CHECK DECELERATION SENSOR OPERATION

(a) Drive the vehicle straight ahead at about 20 km/h (12 mph) or more, lightly depress the brake pedal.

(b) Check that there is no change in the warning light pattern







(c) Drive the vehicle straight ahead at about 20 km/h (12 mph) or more, and depress the brake pedal moderately.
(d) Check that the warning light remains on while braking.







(e) Drive the vehicle straight ahead at about 20 km/h (12 mph) or more, and depress the brake pedal forcefully.

(f) Check that the warning light pattern changes while braking, as shown. If the operation is not as specified, inspect the deceleration sensor installation. If the sensor installation is OK, replace the deceleration sensor.

(g) Stop the vehicle and turn the ignition switch OFF.

(h) Remove SST from the terminals Ts and E1 of the DLC1.
