Advanced Air Bag
Repair and Inspection Required after Accident
WARNING:
Failure to properly inspect and repair a vehicle that has been involved in an accident can result in unsafe operating conditions.
- For any vehicle that was involved in an accident, be sure to inspect all air bag system components including the electrical harness and the areas where they are mounted, even if the air bag system was not activated. Any components deformed or otherwise damaged must be replaced.
- Never use air bag system parts from another vehicle model.
- Do not try to repair the following parts. Replace any of them that are found faulty.
- Driver / passenger air bag (inflator) modules
- Driver-side / passenger-side front side-air bag (inflator) modules
- Driver-side / passenger-side rear side-air bag (inflator) modules
- Driver-side / passenger-side curtain air bag (inflator) modules
- Driver / passenger seat belt pretensioners
- Driver-side / passenger-side forward impact sensors
- Driver-side / passenger-side front side-impact sensors
- Driver-side / passenger-side rear side-impact sensors
- SDM
- Contact coil
- Passenger seat cushion including OCM with sensor mat
- Air bag wire harness in main harness, instrument panel harness, floor harness, passenger air bag harness and seat harness.
- Driver seat position sensor
- Driver / passenger seat belt buckle sensors
- Perform all repairs in a manner which assures that the vehicle's original configuration is restored.
- The SDM that has been involved in an accident severe enough to cause deployment of air bags is not guaranteed to provide its original performance. Never use an SDM that has been involved in an air bag deployment accident. Refer to Air Bag Diagnostic System Check Air Bag Diagnostic System Check:Advanced Air Bag
for the SDM check procedure.
Accident with Deployment / Activation - Component Replacement
When driver and passenger air bags are deployed, the following components must be replaced.

- SDM
- Check for external damage such as deformation, scratch, crack, peeled paint, etc.
- Check SDM for a cause in itself preventing its proper installation. (There is a gap between SDM and SDM plate, or it cannot be fixed securely.)
- Check connector or lead wire of SDM for scorching, melting or damage.
- Check SDM connector and terminals for tightness.
- Check if SDM sets a DTC and is judged as malfunctioning according to the diagnostic flow.
- Air bag wire harness and connections
- Check for damages, deformities or poor connections.
Refer to Inspection of Intermittent and Poor Connections Inspection of Intermittent and Poor Connections:Advanced Air Bag.
- Check wire harness clamps for tightness.
