Viscous Coupling: Description and Operation
Coupling Description
Coupling is installed in the front part of the rear differential. The 4WD control module determines the vehicle driving and road conditions based on information from the sensors and each control module and changes the driving force distribution of the front and rear wheels by controlling the current to the coupling. The coupling air temperature sensor that is installed in the coupling case measures the coupling's ambient temperature.
The 4WD system has two traction modes (2WD and i-AWD). The position can be selected by the 2WD/i-AWD switch.
