ESP (R) System Check
Refer to the following items for the details of each step.
1. Malfunction analysis
Perform Customer complaint analysis.
Perform Problem symptom confirmation.
Perform DTC check, record and clearance
and recheck DTC.
Is same DTC detected again after performing DTC clearance?
YES
Go to Step 6.
NO
Go to Step 2.
2. Visual Inspection
Perform Visual Inspection Visual Inspection.
Is there any faulty condition?
YES
Repair or replace malfunction part, and go to Step 6.
NO
Go to Step 3.
3. Driving test
Perform Step 3: Driving Test.
Is malfunction detected?
YES
Repair or replace malfunction part, and go to step 6.
NO
Go to Step 4.
4. Brakes diagnosis
Inspect and repair referring to Testing and Inspection Brake Symptom Diagnosis.
Is malfunction detected?
YES
Repair or replace malfunction part, and go to step 6.
NO
Go to Step 5.
5. Intermittent problem check
Check for intermittent troubles referring to Intermittent Connection and Poor Contact Inspection Intermittent Connection and Poor Contact Inspection.
Is malfunction detected?
YES
Repair or replace malfunction part, and go to step 6.
NO
Go to Step 6.
6. Final confirmation test
Perform Step 6: Final Confirmation Test.
Does trouble recur?
YES
Go to Step 4.
NO
End.
Step 1: Malfunction Analysis
Customer complaint analysis
Record details of the problem (failure, complaint) and how it occurred as described by the customer.
For this purpose, use of such a questionnaire form as shown in the following table will facilitate collecting information to the point required for proper analysis and diagnosis.

Problem symptom confirmation
If symptom in "Customer Questionnaire" is found or reproduced in the vehicle, confirm the symptom is problem or not. (This step should be done with the customer if possible.) Check warning light related to brake system referring to "EBD Warning Light (Brake Warning Light) Check", "ABS Warning Light Check" and "ESP (R) Warning Light Check" under Warning Light Check Warning Light Check.
DTC check, record and clearance
Perform DTC Check DTC Check
procedure, record it and then clear it. DTC Clearance
Recheck DTC. DTC Check
When DTC which is recorded at DTC check procedure is detected again after performing DTC clearance, go to DTC Check DTC Check
to proceed the diagnosis.
When DTC which is recorded at DTC check procedure is not indicated anymore after performing DTC clearance, ESP (R) control module does not perform the system diagnosis, or temporary abnormality may occur, therefore go to Step 3: Driving Test
to proceed the diagnosis.
Step 2: Visual Inspection
As a preliminary step, be sure to perform visual check of the items that support proper function of the ESP (R) system. Visual Inspection
Step 3: Driving Test
Test the vehicle at 40 km/h (25 mile/h) for more than a minute including left and right turns and check if any trouble symptom (such as ESP (R) warning light and/or ABS warning light) exists.
Step 4: Brakes Diagnosis
Check the parts or system suspected as a possible cause referring to Testing and Inspection Brake Symptom Diagnosis
and based on symptoms appearing on the vehicle (symptom obtained through Steps 1 to 3). Repair faulty parts or replace them, if necessary).
Step 5: Intermittent Problem
Check parts where an intermittent trouble is easy to occur (e.g. wire harness, connector), referring to Intermittent Connection and Poor Contact Inspection Intermittent Connection and Poor Contact Inspection
and related circuit of trouble code recorded in Step 1 to 5.
Step 6: Final Confirmation Test
Confirm that the problematic symptom has gone and ESP (R) is free from any abnormal conditions. If what has been repaired is related to malfunction DTC, clear DTC once referring to DTC Clearance DTC Clearance
and perform test driving and confirm that no DTC is indicated.
