Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Brake Back Plate Removal and Installation

Removal
1. Remove brake drum.
2. Remove brake shoe.
3. Remove wheel cylinder.
4. Remove parking brake cable (1) from brake back plate.





5. Remove rear wheel hub.
6. Remove brake back plate.

Installation
1. Install brake back plate (1) and rear wheel hub.
2. Install parking brake cable (1) to brake back plate.

Tightening torque
Parking cable cap nut a: 11 Nm (1.1 kgf-m, 8.0 ft. lbs.)





3. Install wheel cylinder and connect brake pipe flare nut, and then tighten wheel cylinder bolts and flare nut to specified torque.
4. Install brake shoe.
5. Install brake drum.
6. Fill reservoir with brake fluid and bleed brake system.
7. Upon completion of all jobs, start engine and then depress brake pedal with about 300 N (30 kg, 66 lbs) load at least 3 times until adjuster actuator clicking sound from drum brake can not be heard so as to obtain proper drum-to-shoe clearance. Adjust parking brake cable.
8. Install rear wheel.
9. Check to ensure that brake drum is free from dragging and proper braking is obtained. Perform brake test (foot brake and parking brake).
