NUMBER: 12-115-09
DATE: 11/05/09

APPLICABILITY:
2010MY Outback

SUBJECT:
Rear Seat Will Not Recline

Introduction

If you encounter a customer complaint that the rear seat will not recline, there is the possibility that the reclining cable end came out of the reclining lever assembly. To remedy the condition, refer to the following service procedure.

Countermeasure in Production

The countermeasure in production took place at the end of July, 2009.
Material Required Scotch Vinyl Electrical Tape "Super 88" Heavy-duty grade, or equivalent

Service Procedure/Information

(1) Remove the rear seat cushion by pushing in on the bottom and lifting up to release seat from hooks.

Note:
If the hooks get damaged or pull out of the floor board while removing, make sure to replace them before reinstalling the seat cushion.

(2) Remove the headrests, tilt the backrest forward and flip the backrest carpet up.

(3) Remove cargo area sub-floor and carpet. Remove storage compartment tray and jack tray. Remove the 3 clips which secure the rear floor front panel.

(4) Disconnect the backrest reclining cable at connection.

(5) Remove the Phillips head screw from the reclining level assembly. Disengage reclining lever assembly from seat.

(6) Remove reclining lever assembly.

Tape Installation

Note:
Make sure the surface area of the reclining lever assembly is clean of dirt and grease before applying tape.

1) Cut a piece of tape 12mm x 19mm

2) Install the piece of tape over the reclining cable end (as illustrated) and press firmly into position. Note: Make sure there no raised edges. A raised edge will cause the tape to rub during operation which could cause the tape to come off.

Seat Installation

Install components in the reverse order of removal and verify that release lever is operating correctly.

Warranty/Claim Information

For vehicle within the Basic New Car Limited Warranty period, this repair can be claimed using the table.

Note:
Up to $0.25 may be charged out in sublet to cover the cost of the tape.
