Steering Gearbox

ADJUSTMENT

GEARBOX BACKLASH ADJUSTMENT (SERVICING ON VEHICLE)
1) Using the ST, loosen the lock nut.
2) Loosen the adjusting screw using ST, and apply liquid gasket to the entire area of the adjusting screw threads.
ST 34199AJ000 SPECIAL TOOL CPS LHD
Liquid gasket:
THREE BOND 1141 (Part No. 004403006)





3) Tighten the adjusting screw to the specified torque, then loosen it.
Tightening torque:
9.8 Nm (1.0 kgf-m, 7.2 ft-lb)
4) Tighten the adjusting screw to the specified torque, then loosen it.
Tightening torque:
4.9 Nm (0.5 kgf-m, 3.6 ft-lb)
5) Tighten the adjusting screw to the specified torque, then loosen it approx. 30 degrees.

CAUTION:
Do not loosen by 37 degrees or more.


Tightening torque:
4.9 Nm (0.5 kgf-m, 3.6 ft-lb)
6) Install the lock nut. While holding the adjusting screw, tighten the lock nut using ST.
Tightening torque (lock nut):
39 Nm (4.0 kgf-m, 28.9 ft-lb)

NOTE:
While tightening the lock nut, hold the adjusting screw not to rotate.

FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENT
1) Adjust the front toe.
2) Adjust the steering angle of the wheels.
Standard of steering angle:





3) If the steering wheel spokes are not horizontal when wheels are set in the straight ahead position, or error is more than 5 degrees on the periphery of the steering wheel, correctly re-install the steering wheel.





4) If the steering wheel spokes are not horizontal with vehicle set in the straight ahead position after this adjustment, correct it by turning the right and left tie-rods in the opposite direction from each other by the same angle. Also check that there are no abnormal steering force, failure of the steering wheel to return or other faults.
