Brakes - False MIL ON/EPB DTC C0251
NUMBER: 06-39-09RDATE: 09/30/09
APPLICABILITY:
2010MY Legacy and Outback
SUBJECT:
EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) DTC C0251
Introduction
The purpose of this bulletin is to inform you that a reprogramming file is now available to address DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) C0251 which will change the actuator movement detecting criteria. The pack file will only address C0251. Note: If DTC C0221 or C0281 is present they will need to be diagnosed separately.
When the gear shift selector is moved from "P" to "D" or "R" with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) engaged, the pull force on the parking cable is reduced. The starting of the EPB motor may be delayed, causing the EPB system to misinterpret data (erroneously determining that the motor is stuck). This condition creates DTC C0251 causing the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) to illuminate even though there is no actual malfunction present.
Countermeasure in Production
The new logic was used in production starting with the VINs shown.
Repair Procedure/Information
Reprogramming will need to be performed using FlashWrite with the SSM-III. Because the program on EPB has no CID (Calibration Identification) the procedure for file search and confirmation of reprogramming completion are different from engine and transmission reprogramming.
Flashwrite File Search Process
1. Check mark should be on "Vehicle spec." instead of "CID" on FlashWrite screen.
2. Select Model Year, Vehicle Line, Engine and Aspiration then press SEARCH
3. FlashWrite will display the reprogramming file for EPB.
4. After completing the reprogramming, go to Main Menu in SSM-III then select "Each System Check" then "Brake Control System" then "Parking Brake System". Next, confirm that the EPB program version (Ver. 03) is displayed after completing the reprogramming.
