APPLICABILITY:
2005MY Legacy & Outback Vehicles
SUBJECT:
Audio and Audio/HVAC Diagnostic Faceplate
INTRODUCTION
Beginning with the 2005MY Legacy and Outback models, there has been a change in the configuration of the audio units. The audio units now have a detachable faceplate which will soon be a replacement part. Special Tools have been developed to assist in diagnosing the failure of the audio unit or the faceplate. Up to now, Panasonic has exchanged the audio unit and the faceplate as an assembly. With the release of the Special Tools, exchange audio units will no longer include the faceplate.
On Automatic HVAC models, the faceplate displays both Audio and HVAC functions. On Manual HVAC models, the faceplate only displays Audio functions.
The purpose of this bulletin is to assist with the diagnosis of the Audio or the Audio/HVAC faceplate.
Note:
This bulletin is not intended to diagnose problems with other components of the Audio and/or HVAC system.
PARTS INFORMATION
There are two Special Tool Diagnostic Faceplates, one for vehicles with Automatic HVAC and one for vehicles with Manual HVAC.
The individual tools (available as replacements only through Kent-Moore) will have the Kent-Moore tool numbers of CY-CF1461R for Automatic HVAC and CY-CF1462R for Manual HVAC.
REPAIR PROCEDURES/INFORMATION
If the Audio or Audio/HVAC faceplate is not functioning, start by first following the diagnosis listed in Section 8 and 9 of the applicable Service Manual, Audio System Inspection, HVAC System, HVAC (Auto A/C) Diagnostics and Wiring System. After diagnosing, if the faceplate is still not functioning, follow the appropriate trouble-shooting chart contained within this bulletin.
Note:
Be sure to familiarize yourself with the precautions and removal procedure of the faceplates and Special Tools listed within this bulletin.
PRECAUTIONS
Note:
The following precautions apply to the original faceplates and the Special Tools.
^ Do not use the faceplate if found defective. Do not use if operation is abnormal or wiring harness is broken.
^ Protect the faceplate against water and foreign materials. Penetration of water or foreign materials could cause fire or electric shock. Do not use if there are signs of water penetration or foreign materials.
^ Do not disassemble or modify the faceplate; doing so could cause fire or electric shock.
^ Do not touch the logic board. Static electricity could cause failure of the faceplate.
^ Do no place the faceplate on the carpet; doing so could cause static electricity. Static electricity could cause failure of the faceplate.
^ Handle the faceplate with care; improper handling could cause damage to the electrical internal components.
^ Use the connection cable attached; use of a different type of connection cable could cause failure.
^ Be careful when disconnecting and connecting the cable to prevent damage to the pins.
^ Make sure there is no foreign material inside of the connector terminal; if present an electric short could occur.
^ Do not lay the faceplate on its front side or backside; doing so could cause scratches or damage to the wiring harness.
^ Be careful not to damage the ground terminal (shown) of the Audio Assembly and Audio Unit. If mishandled the ground terminal can bend.
