EGR Valve: Testing and Inspection
EGR System:
1. Warm up engine.
2. Look through opening in EGR valve body and check if shaft moves when engine speed is raised to 3500-4000 rpm under no load condition. By-pass the EGR solenoid from the system during this test.
3. If EGR shaft moves, both EGR valve and vacuum supply system are normal.
4. With engine idling, apply vacuum to EGR valve with a hand vacuum pump. Engine should idle rough or stall.
5. If EGR shaft does not move during step 2, check with a hand vacuum pump. If still inoperative, remove EGR valve and clean or replace. If shaft moves, check and repair the vacuum supply system.
6. If engine does not idle rough or stall during step 4, clean the exhaust gas passage in the cylinder head and/or intake manifold.
