SUBJECT: REVISED REWINDING PROCEDURE FOR NEW STYLE TONNEAU COVER

The tonneau cover retractor mechanism has been updated on all Station Wagon and 3-Door Coupes after the manufacturing date of March 1, 1987. Updated tonneau covers can be easily identified by a textured surface on the end cases, previous covers had a smooth surface. In the event of an updated tonneau cover becoming unwound, follow the revised procedure below to retension the retractor spring.

^ Remove the tonneau cover from the vehicle by compressing the right and left end cases while lifting the cover from the vehicle.

^ Extend the cover so approximately 8 inches of material is off the roll.

FIGURE 1:

^ Push the cover material inward so the cover clears the end case slots on the right and left end cases. Compress both end cases and simultaneously wind both end cases rearward in the opposite direction of the cover. (See Figure 1). Rewind the end cases until a slight spring tension is felt. (Approximately 8 turns -- but not more than 10).

^ Reposition the material back in the slots and install the tonneau cover in the vehicle and extend and retract the cover several times to ensure smooth operation.

If cover cannot be rewound, it should be replaced.
