Evaporative Emission Control Canister: Description and Operation

Canister And Purge Control Valve:

PURPOSE
The canister contains activated carbon as the medium which stores fuel vapors. The purge control valve is an integral part of the canister. When the solenoid is energized and intake vacuum reaches the specified value, the purge control valve opens and allows fuel vapors to flow through the purge line to the intake system. On Turbo models, a second line connects the canister and air intake boot. When intake manifold pressure is over a specific value, fuel vapor is purged into the air intake boot. When the engine is either not running or manifold vacuum is very low due to turbo boost, the purge control valve is closed by its return spring.
