Theft Law & Prevention, Vehicles Affected, Applicable Parts, Original & Replacement Parts Information
I. THE MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT LAW ENFORCEMENT ACT OF 1984
This new law is designed to reduce the number of thefts and decrease the sale of stolen motor vehicle parts.
II. THE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT PREVENTION STANDARD
The standard requires major original equipment motor vehicle parts be identified with the vehicle identification number (VIN) and replacement parts must have an identification marking. The standard is directed at potentially high theft vehicles and replacement parts for those vehicles.
III. VEHICLES AFFECTED
All 1987 model year Subaru XT Coupe models starting with the following VIN's:
HB 300001 AND ON HC 300001 AND ON HD 300001 AND ON HF 300001 AND ON HG 308001 AND ON HB 308001 AND ON

V. ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT PARTS LABEL
FIGURE 1:
All applicable parts on each XT vehicle will be marked in production with the full seventeen character VIN label shown in Figure 1.
NOTE: ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLIES WILL HAVE THE VIN STAMPED ON THE CASTING.

VI. REPLACEMENT PARTS LABEL
All applicable replacement XT parts manufactured after April 24, 1986 will have either replacement parts labels or casting stampings for engine and transmission assemblies. See Figure 2A.
FIGURE 2B:
The labels will have a peel-off cover to protect the label during painting, undercoating, etc. See Figure 2B.
NOTE: THE PEEL-OFF COVER MUST BE REMOVED AFTER PART PREPARATION, PAINTING, UNDERCOATING, ETC.
