Cam Cases, Pipes & Rockers, Sprockets & Cambelts Installation & Engine Reassembly Information
STEP 8) Install right and left cam cases.Clean the fluid packing surface. Check the oil relief valve operation and install a new O-ring. Then apply new fluid packing. Set the camshaft alignment dowel to the 12 o'clock position and install the hydraulic lash adjusters. Install the rocker arms by coating them with lithium grease to hold them to the lash adjusters, and install the cam case and repeat the steps for the other cylinder head.
STEP 9) Re-installing the EGR or ASV pipes and rocker covers
Re-align and bolt the EGR pipe on turbo models and the ASV pipes on non-turbo vehicles to the cylinder head. Then install the rocker covers.
STEP 10) Re-installing the sprockets and cambelts.
Install the inner cambelt covers on both sides. Re-install the cam sprockets and cambelts using the 1986 Subaru Service Manual, section 2-3, pages 38 to 41. Tighten each belt to the proper tension and install the outer cambelt covers.
STEP 11) Reassembly of engine components.
Re-install the engine components in the reverse order of disassembly. Consult the 1986 Subaru Service Manual for detailed information. Check the engine oil level and other fluid levels. Start the engine and re-check the engine idle and ignition timing. Road test the vehicle.
