Rocker Arm & Hydraulic Lash Removal, Valve Spring Tool & Valve Guide Seals Information
STEP 5) Cam case rocker arm and hydraulic lash adjuster removal.Remove the bolts from one cam case (either right or left side) and tap lightly with a plastic mallet on the case to break the fluid packing seal between the cam case and the cylinder head. Lift the cam case away from the cylinder head approximately 1/4" with one hand while using the other hand to reach between the camshaft and cylinder head assembly to remove the rocker arms without dropping them. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters and keep them in order according to how they were removed. Remove the other cam case using the same instructions.
NOTE: ALWAYS KEEP THE HYDRAULIC LASH ADJUSTERS STANDING UP SO THE OIL DOES NOT DRAIN OUT.
NOTE: DO NOT MIX-UP THE ROCKER ARMS. THEY MUST BE RE-INSTALLED IN THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION.
FIGURE 3:
STEP 6) Installation of the valve spring tool on the cylinder head.
Clean the fluid packing from both the right and left cylinder heads. Using a plastic mallet, tap lightly on the valve spring retainers on both cylinder heads to loosen the valve stem retainer keys. Install valve spring tool number X9971AA100 using the four bolts provided. Rotate engine clockwise, to locate top dead center (TDC) of the cylinder chosen to be serviced first. (See Figure 3).
NOTE: DO NOT DAMAGE OTHER PARTS WHEN TAPPING THE RETAINERS.
NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE ANY VALVE SPRINGS WITHOUT HAVING THE PISTON FOR THAT CYLINDER AT TOP DEAD CENTER OR THE VALVE MAY FALL INTO THE OPEN CYLINDER.
FIGURE 5:
STEP 7) Valve spring tool operation.
A) To Remove the valve springs align the tool with the springs, turn the bolt on the tool clockwise to compress the springs and remove the valve stem retainer keys with a magnet. Then turn the bolt counterclockwise to release the springs and remove them (See Figure 5).
FIGURE 4:
B) REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT OF VALVE GUIDE SEALS.
With the inner and outer springs removed from the valve, pry off the old seal. Using the valve tool and seal installer adapter supplied in the kit (See Figure 4), install the new seal over the valve stem and place the seal installer adaptor on top of the seal. Align the bolt assembly on the tool with the adapter and turn the bolt clockwise to seat the seal. Turn the bolt counterclockwise to release the valve seal installer. Repeat this procedure for the remaining valves.
NOTE: DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE BOLT OR DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE TOOL.
NOTE: REPLACE THE OUTER SPRING WITH PART NUMBER 13203AA000 IDENTIFIED BY GREEN PAINT ON THE COILS
FIGURE 5:
C) To Install the valve springs align the tool with the retainer and springs remembering to position the close coils of the springs toward the cylinder head, then turn the bolt on the tool clockwise to compress the springs and Install the stem retainer keys. Make sure the retainer keys are seated and turn the bolt on the tool counterclockwise to release tension and lock the valve spring in position. (See Figure 5).
REPEAT STEPS 6 AND 7 FOR THE REMAINING CYLINDERS AND REMOVE THE TOOL WHEN FINISHED.
