AC/Heater - Temperature Control Modification
NUMBER: 10-38-85DATE: 03-14-85
APPLICABILITY:
ALL 1985 SEDANS AND STATION WAGONS
SUBJECT:
TEMPERATURE CONTROL MODIFICATION
If a vehicle experiences unequal air temperature output between the upper and lower dash outlets during cold weather conditions, it is recommended that you check the heater and, if necessary, adjust the heater control cable and install a baffle plate.
A) Check and, if necessary, adjust the heater control cable using the following procedure.
1) Remove the kick panel from below the steering column.
2) Push the temperature control lever (located to the right of the instrument cluster) to the maximum heating position.
3) Check the cable end to the right of the accelerator pedal by flipping up the select lever cover and inspecting the cable end to ensure that the wire portion of the cable is not showing.
4) If the wire portion is showing, refer to steps # 6 thru # 11 for the temperature control cable adjustment.
5) If the wire portion is not showing, cable adjustment is not necessary; however it will be necessary to install a heater baffle plate.
NOTE:
Refer to procedure "B" for baffle plate installation on A/C equipped vehicles. Refer to procedure "C" for baffle plate installation on NON-A/C equipped vehicles.
6) To adjust the cable, first disconnect the cable sleeve from the clamp on the heater box and remove the cable end from the select lever next to the accelerator cable.
7) Remove the temperature control assembly according to the procedure in Volume 2, SECTION 4-6, PAGE 11 of the 1985 SERVICE MANUAL.
8) Loosen the clamp securing the heater control cable on the left side of the temperature control assembly and push the cable housing down until it stops, then retighten the clamp.
9) Check the cable end down at the select lever to make sure there is no clearance between the cable end and the cable sleeve.
10) Reassemble the temperature control assembly and the meter visor.
11) Reinstall the kick panel below the steering column.
B) The BAFFLE PLATE (P/N 720 70GA 100) is installed between the heater box and the evaporator on all vehicles equipped with A/C using the following procedure:
1) Remove the glove box and the kick panel below the glove box on the passenger side.
2) Unclip and remove only the front part of the bands that seal both ends of the evaporator.
3) For easier installation, flatten the one end of the baffle plate and slightly open up the clip on the top of the plate.
4) Remove the bolts securing the evaporator to the fire wall.
5) Push the evaporator to the right to create a gap between the heater box and the evaporator.
6) Install the baffle plate with the clip on the upper edge of the heater box with the end previously modified in STEP 3 toward the firewall.
7) Resecure the bolts for the evaporator to the firewall.
8) Reinstall the sealing bands onto the evaporator case.
9) Reinstall the glove box and the kick panel.
THIS PROCEDURE FOR ALL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A/C CAN BE CLAIMED UNDER OPERATION # 171-011 AND IS GIVEN A TIME ALLOWANCE OF 1.0 HR. (Failure Code YDC-48).
C) The BAFFLE PLATE (P/N 720 70GA 100) is installed between the heater box and the heater duct on all vehicles not equipped with A/C using the procedure below:
1) Remove the glove box and the kick panel below the glove box on the passenger side.
2) Remove the heater duct from between the heater box and the blower motor assembly.
3) Install the baffle plate with the tab secured to the top of the opening on the heater box.
4) Reinstall the heater duct, glove box, and kick panel.
THIS OPERATION FOR ALL VEHICLES NOT EQUIPPED WITH A/C CAN BE CLAIMED UNDER OPERATION # 171-021 AND IS GIVEN A TIME ALLOWANCE OF 0.8 HRS. (Failure Code YDC-48)
These operations assist in equalizing air temperature at various air outlets.
