Ignition Coil Pack: Description and Operation
GF15.10-P-2100MCC Component Description For Ignition Coils
T1/1 Cylinder 1 ignition coil
T1/2 Cylinder 2 ignition coil
T1/3 Cylinder 3 ignition coil
Location
Ignition coils sit vertically in the valve cover above the respective cylinder.
Task
The ignition coil generates the ignition voltage for the respective spark plug (R4).
Design
The ignition coils consist of a primary coil and a secondary coil with its own power supply and actuation by the ME control unit (N3/10).
Function
When the primary coil is switched on, a self-induction voltage is produced in the secondary circuit. The primary current flow is interrupted at the moment of ignition timing point. The sudden collapse of the magnetic field generates the ignition voltage in the secondary coil which is fed directly to the spark plugs.
In order to suppress any additional ignition spark while cutting out the output stage a high voltage diode is installed in every ignition coil.
