STEERING COLUMN: STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY: REMOVAL
CAUTION:
Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing Service Precautions.
1. PRECAUTION
NOTICE:
After turning the ignition switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal notice before proceeding with work Service Precautions.
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
HINT
Use the same procedure for the LH side as for the RH side Removal.
5. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH
HINT
Use the same procedure for the LH side as for the RH side Removal.
6. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM WEATHERSTRIP LH
7. REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL ASSEMBLY Removal
8. REMOVE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY Removal
9. REMOVE NO. 3 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY Removal
10. REMOVE STEERING PAD Removal
11. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.

(b) Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft.
(c) Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable.
(d) Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.

NOTICE:
Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use.
12. REMOVE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Push the right and left sides of the lower steering column cover, and disengage the 2 claws.
(b) Insert fingers into the opening of the tilt lever of the lower steering column cover to disengage the claw.
HINT
Spread the claw to disengage it.
(c) Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws.
(d) Turn the lower steering column cover and remove the lower steering column cover as shown in the illustration.
13. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER
(a) Disengage the 3 claws and remove the upper steering column cover.
14. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect all the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
(b) Using pliers, expand the clamp.

(c) While holding the clamp expanded, raise the claw using a screwdriver to disengage it, and then remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
15. SEPARATE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
(a) Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering link assembly.

(b) Loosen the bolt A, remove the bolt B and separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect all the connectors and disengage all the wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
(b) Remove the 4 nuts and the steering column assembly.
