P0016
2ZR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0016 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
DESCRIPTION
The ECM optimizes the valve timing by using the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system to control the intake and exhaust camshaft. The VVT system includes the ECM, the Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) and the VVT controller (camshaft timing gear assembly). The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the OCV.
This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. The VVT controller can advance or retard the intake and exhaust camshaft.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0016.
To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The exhaust valve timing is set to the most advanced angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0017.
This DTC indicates that the intake camshaft has been installed toward the crankshaft at an incorrect angle, caused by factors such as the timing chain having jumped a tooth.
This monitor begins to run after the engine has idled for 5 minutes.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
6. Start the engine and warm it up until the ECT reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
7. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C].
8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [D].
9. Read the pending DTCs.
HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
11. Input the DTC: P0016 or P0017.
12. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform steps [E] through [G].
13. Drive the vehicle for 2 to 3 minutes [E].
CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
14. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [F].
15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [G].
16. Read the pending DTCs.
HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
17. Check the DTC judgment result.
18. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- DTC P0016 or P0017 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Those foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.
- If DTC P0016 is displayed, check the VVT system for intake camshaft.
- If DTC P0017 is displayed, check the VVT system for exhaust camshaft.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 AND P0017)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(e) Read DTCs.
Result
HINT
If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0017 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
B -- GO TO DTC CHART Engine Control System - SFI System
A -- Continue to next step.
2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR OR VVT EXHAUST LINEAR)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Start the engine.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Turn the air conditioning switch to ON.
(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1).
(f) Check the engine speed while operating the OCV (for intake or exhaust camshaft) using the Techstream.
OK:
HINT
- If the result is not acceptable, cool the engine so that the engine coolant temperature is 30°C (86°F) or less, and perform the Active Test again.
- For inspection of the intake camshaft OCV, perform Control the VVT Linear.
- For inspection of the exhaust camshaft OCV, perform Control the VVT Exhaust Linear.
NG -- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE OR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. ADJUST VALVE TIMING
HINT
There are no marks on the cylinder head to match-up for the purpose of checking valve timing. Valve timing can only be inspected by lining up the colored plates on the timing chain with the marks on the pulleys. It may be necessary to remove and re-install the chain to match up the alignment marks Reassembly.
