P0013
2ZR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0013: Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1)
P0013 - Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1)
DESCRIPTION
The VVT (variable valve timing) system adjusts the exhaust valve timing to improve driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the VVT controller to adjust the valve timing.
The Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) (for exhaust camshaft) circuit. If the OCV duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.
MONITOR STRATEGY
TYPICAL ENABLING CONDITIONS
TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS
COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
6. Wait 5 seconds.
7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
8. Read the DTCs.
HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
10. Input the DTC: P0013.
11. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
12. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If DTC P0013 is displayed, check the VVT system (for exhaust camshaft) circuit.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0013)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Clear DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
(e) Start the engine and warm it up.
(f) Allow the engine to idle 1 minute or more.
(g) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
(h) Read DTCs.
Result
B -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
A -- Continue to next step.
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT)
(a) Remove the OCV (for exhaust camshaft).
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance:
(c) Apply battery voltage to terminals of the OCV (for exhaust camshaft). Check the valve operation.
OK:
Valve moves quickly.
(d) Reinstall the OCV (for exhaust camshaft).
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT)
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the OCV (for exhaust camshaft) connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard Resistance (Check for Open):
Standard Resistance (Check for Short):
(d) Reconnect the OCV (for exhaust camshaft) connector.
(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
