2AZ-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0136-P0139: Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

DTC P0136 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

DTC P0137 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

DTC P0138 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

DTC P0139 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

PROCEDURE

1. READ OUTPUT DTC (DTC P0136, P0137, P0138 AND P0139)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

(e) Read DTCs.

D -- READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)

C -- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)

2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / A/F Control System / O2S B1 S2.

(e) Allow the engine to idle.

(f) Read the Heated Oxygen (HO2) sensor output voltage while idling.

B -- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)

3. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)





(a) Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance:





(c) Reconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)

(a) Turn the ignition switch to off and wait for 5 minutes or more.

(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance:





(d) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal

OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal

5. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Warm up the engine.

(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume.

(f) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, and monitor the voltage output of air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors displayed on the Techstream.

HINT
- Change the fuel injection volume within the range of 12% and + 12%. The injection volume can be changed in 1% graduations within the range.
- The air fuel ratio sensor is displayed as AFS Voltage B1S1 or and the heated oxygen sensor is display as O2S B1S2 on the Techstream.
- The air fuel ratio sensor has an output delay of a few seconds and the heated oxygen sensor has a maximum output delay of approximately 20 seconds.

HINT
A normal heated oxygen sensor voltage (O2S B1S2) reacts in accordance with increases and decrease in fuel injection volumes. When the air fuel ratio sensor voltage remains at either less or more than 3.3 V despite the heated oxygen sensor indication a normal reaction, the air fuel ratio sensor is malfunctioning.

6. CHECK AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR

HINT
This air fuel ratio sensor test is to check the air fuel ratio sensor current during the fuel-cut. When the sensor is normal, the sensor current will indicate below 3. 0 mA in this test.

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Drive the vehicle by the drive pattern as listed below:

(1) Warm up the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or more.

(2) Drive the vehicle at 60 km/h (37 mph) or more and decelerate the vehicle for 5 seconds or more.

(3) Repeat the deceleration above at least 3 times.





(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Monitor / O2 Sensor / Details.

(f) Confirm that RANGE B1S1 are either Pass or Fail, If the Techstream shows incomplete, recheck RANGE B1S1 after performing the drive pattern.

(g) Select the RANGE B1S1.

(h) Read the TEST Value.

Standard Current:

Less than 3. 0 mA

HINT
If the Techstream shows incomplete again, increase the vehicle speed and use the 2nd gear to decelerate the vehicle.

NG -- REPLACE AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR

OK -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR

7. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Warm up the engine.

(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Injection Volume.

(f) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, and monitor the voltage output of air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors displayed on the Techstream.

HINT
- Change the fuel injection volume within the range of -12% and +12%. The injection volume can be changed in 1% graduations within the range.
- The air fuel ratio sensor has an output delay of a few seconds and the heated oxygen sensor has a maximum output delay of approximately 20 seconds.

Standard:

Fluctuates between 0.4 V or less and 0.55 V or more.

NG -- CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK
OK -- Continue to next step.

8. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Warm up the engine.

(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Injection Volume.

(f) Change the fuel injection volume using the Techstream, and monitor the voltage output of air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors displayed on the Techstream.

HINT
- Change the fuel injection volume within the range of -12% and +12%. The injection volume can be changed in 1% graduations within the range.

HINT
A normal HO2 sensor voltage (O2S B1 S2) reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in fuel injection volumes. When the A/F sensor voltage remains at either less or more than 3.3 V despite the HO2 sensor indicating a normal reaction, the A/F sensor is malfunctioning.

OK -- CHECK ENGINE TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF EXTREMELY RICH OR LEAN ACTUAL AIR FUEL RATIO

9. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK

(a) Inspect for exhaust gas leaks from the exhaust manifold sub-assembly and exhaust pipes.

OK:

No gas leak.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE EXHAUST GAS LEAK POINT Components
OK -- Continue to next step.

10. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HEATER RESISTANCE) P0037

NG -- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.

11. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance (Check for Open):





Standard Resistance (Check for Short):





(d) Reconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.

12. REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR

(a) Replace the heated oxygen sensor Removal.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

13. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

Refer to the confirmation driving pattern for P0136, P0137 and P0138.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

14. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0136, P0137 OR P0138)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

(e) Input DTCs: P0136, P0137 and P0138.

Check the DTC MONITOR is NORMAL. If DTC MONITOR is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the second gear to decelerate the vehicle.

15. REPLACE AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR

(a) Replace the air fuel ratio sensor Removal.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

16. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Clear the DTC DTC Check / Clear

(e) Turn the ignition switch off.

(f) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(g) Start the engine and warm it up.

(h) Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

(i) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.

(j) Input the DTCs: P0136, P0137, P0138.

(k) Check the DTCs judgment result.

17. REPLACE AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR

(a) Replace the air fuel ratio sensor Removal.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

18. PERFORM CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

(a) Refer to the confirmation driving pattern for P0136, P0137 and P0138.

NEXT -- Continue to next step.

19. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0136 OR P0138)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT /Utility / All Readiness.

(e) Input DTCs: P0136 and P0138.

Check the DTC MONITOR is NORMAL. If DTC MONITOR is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the 2nd gear to decelerate the vehicle.

20. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.

(c) Turn the Techstream on.

(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Date List / A/F Control System / O2S B1S2.

(e) Allow the engine to idle.

(f) Read the heated oxygen sensor output voltage while idling.

21. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)





(a) Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector.

(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

22. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CHECK FOR SHORT)

(a) Turn the ignition switch to off and wait for 5 minutes or more.

(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

Standard Resistance:





(d) Reconnect the ECM connector.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR - ECM)

OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal

23. READ DTC OUTPUT (DTC P0139 IS OUTPUT AGAIN)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Clear the DTCs DTC Check / Clear.

(d) Turn the ignition switch off.

(e) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

(f) Start the engine.

(g) Warm up the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (165°F) or more. [B]

(h) Drive the vehicle 60 km/h (37 mph) and decelerate the vehicle for 8 seconds or more. [C]

(i) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness. [D]

(j) Input DTCs: P0139.

(k) Check the DTCs monitor is NORMAL. If DTC monitor is INCOMPLETE, perform the drive pattern increasing the vehicle speed and using the 2nd gear to decelerate the vehicle.
